dojo
ˈdəʊdʒəʊ/
noun
noun: dojo; plural noun: dojos
- 1.a room or hall in which judo and other martial arts are practised. It is important to me that I get that definition clear form the outset, as I am just setting out on my journey. This blog will serve as as a self reflective tool, an aide-memoire and most importantly a place to show the results of practicing the skills that will lead me(and hopefully you) to be a better painter. In short, I am no Roman Lappat or Volomir so this will be a case of learning with me rather than learning from me :)I have been painting off and on for nearly 20 years, and, in my own way, I have been happy with my work. Recently I was asked to paint some models for some friends and their gaming group and it was at that point that I realised that painting for the joy of it is one thing, but producing a work for someone else is an entirely different ball game.Of course, both have merit. I strongly believe that one of the most important aspects of this hobby is that you enjoy yourself! However, part of the enjoyment for me now will be to see my results improve and for the reactions of those who see my work (whether it be friends asking for models or viewers on CMON) to change for the better. How is he going to do this and why should I read the blog?On the blog you will find reviews of major painting resources, whether that be video, audio, books or websites. This will include items like the Miniature Mentor Video Series and The Painting Buddha and how they might be able to change and improve they way we paint. Not only that, but we will also explore materials that you may not have used like paint brands, brushes, washes and airbrushes.Another area that I want to address is one of style. There is a marked difference in style between the top European Painters and the top US painters. What are the differences, why? and which suits you better? So thanks for reading! Next post will show the current "state" of my art and why I need to spend time in the Dojo!-Pete
